For those unfamiliar, Lee Scratch Perry, AKA Rainford Hugh Perry, is a Rastafarian dub reggae pioneer from Kendal, Jamaica. He's one of the country's most important musical icons, active since 1958, and his influence extends far beyond it.
Perry may be 78-years-old, but he continues to put in work nonetheless, his latest offering having been produced by none other than New Jersey Wunderkind Clams Casino. "Jesus Is A Soul Man" is a beautifully minimal take on the dub reggae genre, functioning perfectly in that lane despite the generation gap here.
The track will be included in a re-release bundle for the the 2008 documentary The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee "Scratch" Perry, which chronicles the legendary's artist's career over a period of 50 years. For more information, you can click here or watch the official trailer below.
We realize this is far from hip-hop, but given Clams' involvement, we thought it only right to shine some light. It may be Friday, but try turning down for a change.
Quotable Lyrics
When Jesus Christ is in the mix
All things are possible
When Jesus Christ is not in the mix
Nothing is possible
You hear me? Do you understand?
Jesus is a Soul Man
