Following the election of Donald Trump, New Balance's VP of public affairs said, "The Obama admin turned a deaf ear to us & frankly w/ Pres-Elect Trump we feel things are going to move in the right direction." Shortly thereafter those comments got out, people began throwing their New Balance sneakers in the trash, setting them on fire, etc.
New Balance has since issued the following statement in an attempt to clear up any issues regarding their support of Trump.
"New Balance publicly supported the trade positions of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump prior to election day that focused on American manufacturing job creation and we continue to support them today."
"The statement is correct in the context of trade, not talking about large geo-political anything, but in the context of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement," LeBretton said.
But that hasn't stopped the backlash and New Balance sneakers across the country have gone from the closet to the can.
Enter: Reebok
As New Balance sneaker owners began tweeting out pictures of their sneakers being thrown away, Reebok swooped in and offered to replace their New Balances with a pair of Reeboks.
