While on the Breakfast Club, veteran rapstress Lil Kim explains the origins of her beef with fellow female rapper Nicki Minaj. Lil Kim goes on a heartfelt rant about how it all started, explaining it in detail. Read what she said below.
She explains it goes beyond Nicki Minaj, to a bad deal with Cash Money, "It’s deeper than that. Me and Slim were friends for four years, and we decided we were going to go into business together. I was over there at Cash Money, I was getting ready to be partners with him. When I was over there, we were working a lot. I was in Miami and he would put me in the studio."
She continued, "Baby said to me, 'hey you know I want you to be in my album,' he sent this song over, it was empty, it had a hook on it, I sent it back to him, quick. They had the record for awhile...I said to Slim, when I went back to Miami, 'cause I'm not stupid, I said to him...'go ahead, put whoever you want on the record,' 'cause I already knew, I already knew, but I said this record's gotta be big,"
Kim continues to explain that they said they'd do a video for the song and all that. However Kim says, when they put the record out, they didn't like the response so they just pulled it and didn't put it on the album or anything. Then she says she didn't hear from them for awhile, and shortly after that Nicki started releasing a whole bunch of records, with her vocals sounding like Lil Kim's vocals. Lil Kim says that, "that was a sound that I was getting ready to start," which it seems Nicki Minaj took over. She says that she "brought that sound to the table," whether her fans would like it or not, it was her sound which Nicki took.
Kim continued, "The problem with her is, she was very catty with it. I never had a problem with her. I was always nice with her. Always. She was a very obnoxious person, but I was very nice with her. From the time I saw her in that dressing room, the story she told, I don’t even know what the heck she was talking about. That’s not even how it happened. But from the moment that I met her, I was always cool with her. But after that, it almost seems like, when they realized, OK, we need Kim, we want to study her swag, that’s what it kind of felt like because I was around for a long time. They were like, OK, let’s study her swag and I think they wanted to get that record just to stamp that I was OK with what was going on."
She added, "After that whole Cash Money situation with the song, we’re at Justin’s birthday party. Perfect time to come up and say, ‘Hey, we did the song together.’ Nothing. And she looked at me and rolled her eyes, and I was like, really? Every single record she made was coming at me."
