Usually, artists don’t get fictional shows or movies about their lives until they are dead (or close to it). Not so for electronic music DJ and producer Diplo, who is getting a show based on his life at the tender age of 38. The catch? It’s a spoof show tentatively titled “What Would Diplo Do?”
The show is being created for Vice’s Viceland TV network, and would be the channel’s first fictional offering. Diplo has always been a divisive figure in the hip hop and electronic music worlds, embracing that image as a pseudo-bad boy of the genre. The show will reportedly play off that – it’s been described as “‘Louie’ meets WorldStar HipHop crossed with ‘Spinal Tap’.” If you’re having a hard time picturing what that looks like, watch the video promo for Diplo’s Mad Decent Block Party summer concert series; it was the inspiration for the show.
Former “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek will star as Diplo, a talented dude who no one really likes being around, for a short six episode season. The show will begin at some point in 2016. Watch the inspiration for the show below, which Van Der Beek told Deadline he, “never thought it would lead to a series.”
