"It wasn't just sweet treats being sold at the Gates Candy Store."
The bodega, located at Gates Ave near St. Nicholas Ave in Bushwick, Brooklyn, was allegedly packaging and selling large amounts of heroin from inside a secret, hidden room and when police raided the spot they came up with a truck load of evidence including two barrels full of a cutting agent, several containers of the prescription painkiller fentanyl, and multiple bags of heroin worth approximately $100,000.
A neighbor, William Morales, said that he "saw a lot of expensive cars stopping off to allegedly buy 'candy' late at night, and he said the food inside the store wasn’t very appetizing." He explained, "They don’t have anything there fresh, or anything that I’ve seen. You know, I went there once and everything was old."
The NYPD was tipped off about the secret drug operation when the New York State Department Of Taxation And Finance spotted the drug paraphernalia while conducting an investigation of possible illegal cigarette scales.
Two men were arrested during the raid and are being charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and of course, "operating major drug trafficking."
