While the current status of his vision may be ambiguous at best, the intellectual sungazer slash murderer of instrumentals Joey Bada$$ has delivered a smooth new video. The Statik Selektah produced cut followed up the release of the New York rapper's politically charged All Amerikkkan Bada$$, and deviated from some of the album's core themes. While some might mourn the socially conscious direction Joey was occupying, there were several who simply wanted some smooth, badass bars over similarly smooth and basass production. With this joint, the latter group scored a W.
The video was directed by DaBigPicture, and finds Joey cruising down the street as he reflects on the effects THC has on his brain. The clip also follows a loose narrative, where Joey meets a girlfriend and proceeds to drive her around down, stopping to occasionally cop a feel. While the video features a lot of time spent on driving, the clip has an undeniable "hip-hop" feel, with graffiti-laden walls providing a classic backdrop for Joey's late night cruising sessions.
As a matter of fact, everything about this video seems to embrace hip-hop's roots, including a scene where Joey raps to the camera beside a parked whip, crouching down to deliver bars while in a b-boy stance. Speaking of roots, it's also reminiscent of Joey's own musical ones, harkening back to the days of b4.da.$$. It's only appropriate that "500 Benz" received an appropriately throw-back video. Check out the video now, but if you're going to watch it for too long, be sure to wear some sort of protective eyewear.
