Earlier this year, it seemed like Ab-Soul was dispirited in seeing himself toward the back of TDE's roster, as his last album was released in Summer 2014. Last month, however, he appeared on the great posse cut off Danny Brown's new album and then dropped off his own single, "Huey Knew," featuring the well-respected Jersey rapper Da$h. The anticipation for Soulo's next album, DWTW (Do What Thou Wilt), is back where it should be. He's now dropped the new "Huey Knew" video, which hopefully signals that the rollout for DWTW is just getting started.
The politically minded video is fittingly shot in black and white, as Soulo "blacks out" in front of huge projections of news footage of turmoil caused by all-powerful white institutions. With the help of producer Willie B., the song has a chilling '90s ambiance, reminding hip-hop heads that seriously vicious rap music was alive in that era. Soulo's raps are too unhinged for "Huey Knew" to be called protest music, though there's plenty of powerful social commentary along the way.
Expectations for Ab-Soul's upcoming fourth album? The previous TDE albums that have dropped this year have set the bar mighty high.
