It's been an unpredictable year for iLoveMakonnen, as the oddball Atlanta rapper left OVO and announced his retirement soon after. Hopefully last month's surprise Red Trap Dragon mixtape is proof that he isn't going anywhere, but in any case, Makonnen has already left a memorable impact upon the rap game. In April, he put out a 10-minute freestyle that encapsulated all the reasons why we, indeed, love Makonnen. Entitled "I Remember Makonnen," what might've started as a spur-of-the-moment Periscope freestyle ended up as a profound look back at Makonnen's adolescence and his early career, providing much insight into the imaginative, sometimes reclusive artist that he is today.
Makonnen is now back with the "I Remember" video, which makes use of about two and a half minutes of the original freestyle. The viewer is then transported to a separate visual -- to the slow, somber track "Sometimes," also released in April. Whereas the "I Remember" video is made up of recent camcorder footage of Makonnen having a great time, the "Sometimes" video is highly stylized and cinematic, starring a woman who looks like the human embodiment of Martha, or the doll head whom he's often seen with.
