Barack Obama threw an Independence Day barbecue in honor of military veterans last night at the White House. Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae performed at the event, and Obama closed the festivities by joining them on stage to say a few words. He called them “both amazing artists, talented and popular and doing great things," urged the party-goers to take a few moments to appreciate their good fortune to live in the United States, and finished by leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday in honor of his daughter Malia, who turned 18.
