Tonight is Hollywood's biggest night, with the 88th edition of the Academy Awards. Black Hollywood, however, was almost entirely excluded from this year's ceremony, as movies like "Straight Outta Compton" and "Creed" were mostly absent from the list of nominees. Many have felt that the "Straight Outta Compton" snub is a direct result of the lack of diversity within the Academy's nominating body, evidence that the spectacle is merely representative of a white audience.
Just in time for tonight's Oscars, the YouTube comedy channel Super Deluxe has created a trailer to the N.W.A. biopic that's, perhaps, more suited to a white audience, and thus, more likely to receive Oscar recognition. The hilarious new trailer, which amends the film's title to "Straight Out of Compton," paints Jerry Heller, as played by Paul Giamatti, as the protagonist and the hero -- the man fully responsible for the success of the Compton rap group.
It shows Heller gleefully coming up with the group's signature "fuck the police" slogan and defending them from racist officers. It manages to create a perception of the film that's nothing at all like the final product, though one can imagine this trailer looking more appealing to those seated in tonight's audience at the Dolby Theatre.
