Rob Markman of MTV News caught up with Big K.R.I.T., OG Maco, and Soulja Boy this past weekend to ask them their thoughts on the movement to remove the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state house. All three rappers had good things to say on the subject:
I see a lot of people saying like 'that's our heritage' or things like that," Maco said. "But if that's the case you might as well let white people say 'n*gger.' They go hand in hand, the confederate flag, we was getting called 'n*ggers' back then."
Somewhat urprisingly, Soulja Boy makes a good point that Kanye West once appropriated the flag by sewing it onto his jacket sleeve. He also said that he stands firmly with the NAACP.
"I know what you're doing when you say 'we want the old times back,'" KRIT said with a wry grin on his face. "Dixieland, I know what ALL that means."
Markman let Maco get the last word: "It's wrong, and it's outdated, and it's what allows people to cling on to systematic racism."
