In celebration of Illmatic's 20th Anniversary, Nas' new Mass Appeal imprint held a contest that invited fans to submit ideas for a "Represent" music video, with the winner being selected to produce and direct the video. Filmmaker Brian Katz won, and now Mass Appeal is previewing his visuals with a behind-the-scenes look at the shoot.
Taking inspiration from DJ Premier's sampling of the soundtrack from 1924 film The Thief Of Baghdad on the track, Katz says his video is influenced by the film. He attempted to show similarities between Nas and the protagonist, as well as Queens and Baghdad.
