Sampling another artist's work is always a bold move for an up-and-comer. It's almost begging for a listener to compare them to the original artist--to critique on association. It's even bolder when the song you're sampling was an instant classic. Taking his cues from Luniz's west coast smash hit, "I've Got 5 On It," Khleo Thomas and producer Bugsy interpolate the instrumental and make the song their own. The visuals, directed by Gino Productions, are reminiscent of the original's remix video but with a slick editing style that would have been unachievable when the original visuals were released.
"5 On It" is the lead single to Khleo's upcoming Raised In The 90's EP set to drop later this year.
As a side note, you may recognize Khleo as Hector Zeroni (Zero) from Disney's Holes. He was recently featured on our list of the best hip-hop songs recorded for film.
