Aaliyah was taken from the world very early. Her music was revolutionary in the way it blended pop, R&B and hip hop simultaneously. Her influence has been everlasting, even being a template for how we listen to R&B and hip hop in 2017. While her music was revolutionary, she had also had an impact in fashion that is just as influential in 2017 as it was in the 90's. As today marks 16 years since her passing, we remember Aaliyah's artistry as people pay their tribute online. While last year marked 15 years since her passing, a campaign on change.org garnered 26,000 signatures asking MAC Cosmetics to create "Aaliyah for MAC" collection. The petition clearly worked since a year later, MAC Cosmetics has announced that they'll be launching an Aaliyah-inspired collection in 2018 on the 16th anniversary of her death.
On a post on Instagram, MAC has unveiled that due to the petition, they too will be celebrating the late-singers life with a cosmetic collection. On the post the caption reads, "Aaliyah is truly one in a million — an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all. Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the M·A·C Aaliyah collection. You made it happen! Stay tuned in 2018. #AaliyahforMAC @aaliyah_haughton_official"
This acts as the second fan-driven collection that MAC has brought to life. Last October, they released a tribute collection for Selena Quintanilla which was also successful.
It's unfortunate that Aaliyah isn't here to witness it. In an interview with "Sisters In Style" magazine that resurfaced, she said that she herself was a fan of the cosmetic brand.
This is the second cosmetic brand to pay tribute to the late-singer. It was only two years a go that Xyrena teamed up with Diane and Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah's mother and her brother to launch a perfume in dedication to the singer. The perfume was created to not only appeal to Aaliyah's fan but as well as introduce her to a new generation of music lovers. With "Aaliyah For MAC" coming next year, we can only assume the lipstick will hopefully have a similar impact on the younger generation.
