The New York Giants could be without star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for "a week or two of the regular season," due to the injury he sustained during the Giants' 10-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Monday night.
Beckham exited the game after a low hit from Browns cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun, which drew some criticism from around the league, but it initially appeared as though the injury was minor as he was able to walk off the field under his own power. After the game, he was seen jogging into the locker room.
The Giants later announced that Odell underwent an MRI which revealed an ankle sprain, and basically guarantees that he'll miss the team's final two preseason games. Despite jogging into the locker room shortly after the injury took place, ESPN reports that Beckham's ankle was "very sore" Tuesday and now the team is waiting to see how he responds to treatment.
ESPN reports, it's "not out of the question he could miss a week or two of the regular season," according to one source. This morning, Beckham told ESPN's Josina Anderson, "I'm taking it one day at a time."
While Odell described the hit from Briean Boddy-Calhoun as, "just football," others around the league called the play a "cheap shot" and called into question, once again, why star players are taking part in the preseason in the first place.
Giants safety Landon Collins was one of the many players who felt the hit was wrong, and he let reportedly Briean Boddy-Calhoun know about it.
Per ESPN,
"I said he was wrong for what he did,'' Collins said after the game. "He said, 'It is what it is.'
"I'm gonna say it just like this, I couldn't have a teammate next to me playing that way. I can't condone it. It's nothing I seek. He had the opportunity to go out and make a different route. That's how I feel about it. ... It's not a penalty, but everybody knows, that's something you don't do."
The Giants will open up the regular season on September 10th with a Sunday night game against the Cowboys in Dallas, followed by another primetime game at home against the Lions on Monday, September 18th.
