As part of Gatorade's "Beat the Heat" safety campaign, Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns teamed up with Brooklyn Nets point guard D'Angelo Russell to put their skills to the test... in beach volleyball.
KAT and D'Angelo took to their talents to Venice Beach, California to challenge pro beach volleyball player April Ross and her teammates Geena Urango and Lauren Fendrick to a little game of two-on-two.
Neither Towns nor Russell had much experience playing two-on-two volleyball, let alone playing in the sand against two of the sport's biggest competitors, regardless of how much gatorade they were chugging.
Dr. James Carter, Director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute said in a press release,
“It’s critical for athletes, coaches, parents and trainers to know the warning signs of dehydration and heat illness and consistently monitor for these symptoms, especially in the hot summer months,” said Dr. James Carter, Director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI). “Sweat is comprised of more than just water, so sports drinks that contain electrolytes help to effectively retain and regulate fluids. Additionally, the consumption of carbohydrates found in sports drinks can help an athlete’s performance.”
All of the electrolytes in the world couldn't save the young NBAers from getting throttled by Geena Urango and Lauren Fendrick out on the beach.
