At the Governor's Ball, Donald Glover recently sent fans into panic mode after announcing his plans on retiring his musical alter ego Childish Gambino. During a promotional event for his hit series Atlanta, the actor opened up to the Huffington Post about the rationale behind his decision. Ultimately, it comes down, at least to an extent, legacy preservation.
"There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” says Glover. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”
Quality over quantity, I get that. It's clear that Glover is a man of many talents, with music being one of many. And while "Redbone" is elevating him to new commercial heights (17th on the Billboard charts), Glover's other creative endeavors seem to be doing just fine. The rapper slash actor slash writer slash comedian is tapped to star in a bunch of upcoming films, including Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, Spider-Man: Homecoming, & The Lion King. Basically, Glover has solidified himself as the nerd-king.
What are your thoughts on Glover's rationale? Is it better to go out on top, or will you lament the absence of new Childish Gambino for years to come?
