The Georgetown Hoyas have officially announced that Patrick Ewing will replace John Thompson III as the team's head coach.
Ewing, who played under John Thompson Jr. for the Hoyas from 1981-85, led the team to three National Championship games and won the title in 1984.
The 54-year old Hall of Fame center has put in 15 years as an assistant coach in the NBA and is currently serving as the Charlotte Hornets’ associate head coach under Steve Clifford. However, Adrian Wojnarowski reports that #33 will take over duties as the Hoyas head coach immediately and won't finish the season with the Hornets.
Despite Ewing's experience as an assistant he has constantly been overlooked when head coaching positions opened up in the NBA.
John Thompson III, who had been the Hoyas head coach for the last 13 seasons, was recently fired after the team went 5-13 in the Big East.
