As a follow-up to his 2017 Grammy-winning effort Coloring Book, Chi-town phenom Chance The Rapper said he has good reasons to focus on a debut album.
"I think I might actually sell this album. That's, like, a big step in itself. I kind of hate the fact that I can't chart, really. I can chart, but the way they have the streaming shit set up is weak as fuck," he said.
Appearing on the cover of the month's issue of Complex, Lil Chano waxed on the joys of raising a family at a young age and his relationship with Kanye West among other things. He also explained the limits of streaming-only projects.
"It's unfair. 1,500 streams is the equivalent to one [album sale], and that's just that's unfair. Nobody listens to their songs [1,500] times when they buy it—fuck outta here! So, it makes it hard. I can't really compete with other people," he said.
Though he said he isn't obsessed with getting entries on Billboard charts, it must be dispiriting to watch all your peers do it. Migos, Future, Big Sean and Kodak Black have taken the charts by storm this year.
"Not that the charts matters at all, but like, come on. Anyways, I think having it for purchase would be dope. Also, this is all hypothetical. There is no album. I can feel fans squirming in their chair, like, 'Oh shit, he's changing!' This is an idea," he explained.
Coloring Book was the first streaming-only project to get nominations and win at the prestigious Grammy Awards.
