Will it be able to replicate the success of "The New Edition Story"?

Fresh off the impressive success of BET’s miniseries The New Edition Story, and VH1 is already looking to get a piece of that pie. They aren’t straying too far from the original formula either, allegedly putting together a biopic for 90s R&B foursome Jodeci.

The news was revealed by Jodeci member Mr. Dalvin during an interview on Bay Area radio station Q102.3, which Dalvin himself later uploaded to Instagram. He says that the show is “looking at an end of the year release,” with casting being started very, very soon.

Similar to New Edition, Jodeci formed in the 1980s with members DeVante Swing, Mr. Dalvin, K-Ci and JoJo and quickly became wildly popular in the early 1990s before eventually breaking up. Two of its members went on to form K-Ci and JoJo. Aside from the usual trials and tribulations brought upon by sudden fame, the story has other interesting tidbits. For one, the Uptown records intern assigned with developing Jodeci was none other than Sean “P. Diddy” Combs.

BET isn’t done with hip hop biopics either. They’re currently working on Street Dreams, a mini-series based on Nas’ life. Media company Viacom owns both VH1 and BET, so they're feasting on this new trend.
