The current chairperson of the African Union, South African politician Nkosazana Dlamini-Zumahas, has condemned President Trump's executive order on immigration, saying the policy "presents one of the greatest challenges to our unity and solidarity."
"The very country to which many of our people were taken as slaves during the transatlantic slave trade has now decided to ban refugees from some of our countries,” Dlamini-Zuma yesterday at an AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Trump's executive order bans immigration and travel from seven Muslim-majority countries for a 90-day span. Refugees from those countries are banned from entering the US for 120 days. Three of the AU's 54 member states -- Sudan, Libya, and Somalia -- are among the countries targeted by the policy.
Dlamini-Zuma said that Trump's early actions as president signal that "very turbulent times" lie ahead for the African continent.
