Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin are not satisfied with the state of things.

Next month marks the 5th anniversary of the day Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Florida. While the nation has since experienced a number other police shootings, Martin’s remains in people’s minds as one of the first in the modern era of heightened awareness about police (and citizen) violence against black Americans. The five years hasn’t softened the hearts of Martin’s parents, who revealed they are now considering running for public office to “be part of the change” in the United States.

In an interview with USA Today, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin (they are divorced) reveal how their perspective has radically changed since that fateful evening in February in 2012. Where before they were comfortable with their “average” lives, they now want to help push progress that they both feel hasn’t been made since their son’s death.

“The only way we can be part of the change is if we start with local government and we work our way up,” explains Fulton. They also cite Trump’s recent election as additional motivation to begin working in politics. If they decided to pull the trigger on a political bid, they hope to eventually make it to the national stage.

Trayvon Martin would have been 22 years old next Sunday.
