There are more Americans who identify as LGBT than ever before, according to a recent Gallup poll. Going off a survey of 1.6 million U.S. adults over the past five years, the poll has determined there to be over 10 million Americans who identify as either lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. That number is up from 8.3 million LGBT Americans in 2012.
The survey simply asked, "Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender?" Without specifying one of those options, apparently 49,000 people answered "yes."
A reported 58% of those LGBT respondents are millennials. In 2012, millennials accounted for 43% of those who identified as LGBT. The report surrounding the poll surmises that millennials now account for a majority of LGBT-identifying adults due to them being "the first generation in the U.S. to grow up in an environment where social acceptance of the LGBT community markedly increased."
According to the survey, women are more likely than men to identify as LGBT. The poll determined that 4.4% of U.S. women now identify as LGBT, compared to 3.3% of men. The data found increases mostly across the board when it comes to ethic groups, but the jumps in LGBT-identifying Asians and Hispanics were more significant than the slight increases among LGBT whites and blacks.
