The final night of The BPM Festival, a hugely popular 10-day electronic music event held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, ended in tragedy. Early this morning, a lone gunman opened fire outside of a closing party, and thus far, there have been four reported deaths along with 12 injuries. Three of the casualties were members of the BPM security team.
The festival confirmed the death toll and the number of injuries via a statement shared to its Facebook page earlier this morning. “We are overcome with grief over this senseless act of violence and we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement and government officials as they continue their investigation,” the statement reads.
According to the statement, the shooting began outside of the Blue Parrot nightclub. It is unclear if the shooter was able to enter the club, though it is clear that partygoers heard the shots and felt endangered. At least some of the club seems to be outdoors, or partly exposed to the outside streets. Below is footage of people running for cover in response to the shooting.
British DJ Jackmaster was in the club when the gunfire broke out.
