President Barack Obama is currently in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois tonight to officially say goodbye to the nation in his nationally-televised farewell speech airing at 9 PM EST.
Going down at the sold out McCormick Place in Chicago, Obama said the speech would be "a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey … and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here." Barack will look to revive the spirits of progressives who he'd hoped to rally behind Hillary Clinton. Though his speech won't be policy-oriented or carry any direct contrasts with Trump, his message will offer a "hopeful" vision for the future, according to administration officials.
"After eight years as your President, I still believe that," Obama will say, according to the advanced clips. "And it's not just my belief. It's the beating heart of our American idea -- our bold experiment in self-government."
Throughout the speech, Obama will highlight the achievements & success of his presidency through his 8 years in term, using statistics showing the country better off now than eight years ago.
“It's easy to lose sight of that in the blizzard of our minute-to-minute Washington news cycles. But America is a story told not minute to minute, but generation to generation," Obama wrote on Facebook. "We've made America a better, stronger place for the generations that will follow. We've run our leg in a long relay of progress, knowing that our work will always be unfinished."
