Detroit Lions' linebacker DeAndre Levy recently sat down for an interview with Men's Journal to talk about a wide range of topics including his "proudest moment in college," which was when he accidentally broke the late Joe Paterno's leg.
Back in 2006 while Levy was still playing for the Wisconsin Badgers he made a sideline tackle and barrelled into Joe Pa.
He told Men's Journal:
"That dirtbag, man," says Levy of Paterno, who was recently implicated as being aware of child sexual abuse committed by his assistant Jerry Sandusky as early as 1976. "We've gotta stop prioritizing sports over humanity," says Levy. "Just because somebody can throw a football or coach football, they're excluded from their wicked acts."
Ironically, his current head coach Jim Caldwell coached under Paterno from 1986-1992 and he has often spoken highly of the Penn State icon. He told ESPN.com while he doesn't necessarily agree with Levy's opinion he respects his right to express himself however he wants.
“Really, I think I’ve gone on record many times about how I feel about Joe,” Caldwell said. “And in regard to our players making their statement about how they feel, I’d be hypocritical to tell you anything other than the fact that they can express their opinion. We don’t all necessarily agree with it.”
