McGregor goes after the lightweight champ on November 12th.

Conor McGregor will be fighting lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden- the first UFC event in New York City since 1997. UFC officials confirmed the bout early this morning, saying the two will obviously headline the event on November 12th, and that Alvarez's title will be on the line.

"This is the fight the fans wanted," he told ESPN, "and I’m excited that our very first event at Madison Square Garden will be headlined by Eddie Alvarez defending the lightweight title against Conor McGregor. This card has three world title fights and is the best card in UFC history."

In preparation for the 155-pound title fight, McGregor will not be forced to defend his featherweight belt between now and UFC 205. If he's successful in beating Alvarez, he'll become only the third UFC fighter [BJ Penn, Randy Couture] to hold two belts in different weight classes at the same time.

Also on the UFC 205 card: Welterweight champ Tyron Woodley vs Stephen Thompson and strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
