Running up an outrageous phone bill is the least concern of Olympic athletes in Rio this month, but it became a very real issue for a Japanese Olympian who racked up $5,000 in roaming charges from his carrier while playing too much Pokemon Go.
Artistic gymnast, Kohei Uchimura, who won the gold during the 2012 Games in London, downloaded Pokemon Go when he arrived in Sao Paulo for training but got so hooked on it that he forgot about all the roaming charges that he was being hit with.
According to reports, “He looked dead at the team meal that day.”
The wildly popular game just came out in Brazil today, but the Japanese version has been out for quite some time and those roaming charges can really add up when you're using your phone abroad for anything online.
But, as with all things Pokemon Go this could've been a lot worse- at least he didn't walk off a cliff or drive into a police vehicle while playing.
