In March of this year, one of rap's icons and forefathers passed away. Phife Dawg, of A Tribe Called Quest, died at the age of 45 due to complications from diabetes. The hip-hop world mourned in unison when he passed, paying tribute across social media and beyond. Among the latter category, we saw a petition circulate that called for the renaming of a Queens park after Phife, while in another instance, those close to the rapper put together an event to celebrate Phife's life at the Apollo Theatre, which was live streamed for fans.
While the Queens park may not be renamed after Phife, it looks like he'll be getting a very similar tribute. According to Okayplayer, Phife's management team confirmed that the intersection of Linden Blvd. and 192nd St. in Queens, New York would be named after the late MC, paying homage to the rapper's roots.
The confirmation came via a text message that read: "Just wanted to let every one know that the New York mayors office just called me and said the mayor is signing the bill to co-name Linden Blvd @192 to Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor way on 8/3 at 10am at City Hall, Lower Manhattan."
Bless. RIP to Phife, and if you haven't yet, check out the posthumously-released track "Nutshell."
