People are still talking about Rich Homie Quan's botched performance of the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Get Money" verse at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors last week. The Atlanta rapper has since released a sincere apology to New York, his fans, and the late Biggie himself, but when Lil' Kim, who performed the tribute with Quan, appeared on Sway In The Morning, there were still more questions to be asked.
As far as what went through her head when Quan messed up the lyrics of the legendary rapper, Kim joked it was "oh God, what am I going to tell Brooklyn?", adding "I'm loyal to the the culture... when this happened... it was diappointing and all that, but I actually knew the behind-the-scenes, and how that actually could have happened."
According to Kim, Quan was selected at the last minute after two rappers that were supposed to participate in the performance cancelled. “He just jumped on that plane," she said of the Rich Homie when he first got the call. "And the whole thing was he was coming to fuck with Lil' Kim. He was coming to support Lil' Kim. He did not know at that time that he was going to be performing ‘Get Money.’ He didn’t know that.”
"Get Money" was actually added to the setlist in the "9th hour," which definitely upped the pressure. “He was very nervous,” she said. “He’s such a good person. He was like, ‘It’s an honor that y’all would even put me in this position to fill such big shoes.'" Kim also attests that Quan did perform the entire verse at rehearsals (where he may have had the assistance of a teleprompter, something he said was not present at the actual event).
