One of Johnny Manziel's lawyers, Bob Hinton, accidentally sent a damning text to an AP reporter, hinting that the legal team was looking to strike a plea deal with prosecutors (for his assault charges), doubting Manziel's ability to stay off of drugs.
"Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle," the attorney wrote.
Hinton also wrote that he had been emailed a "heads up" receipt "which purports to reflect" that Manziel made a purchase of $1,018.77 at a Gas Pipe store at 12:03 p.m. on Tuesday, less than a day after his crash.
The texts were unintentionally sent to an AP reporter who was seeking comment about Manziel's recent hit and run accident, in which Manziel's car was hit and the suspect fled, allegedly.
Naturally, Hinton said the texts that he inadvertently sent were protected by attorney-client privilege and threatened to sue if certain details were published. I highly doubt he'll be Johnny's attorney for much longer though.
But according to the AP, the text messages showed that Manziel's attorneys are pushing for leniency, even as they grapple with indications he could still be struggling with substance abuse more than a year after his stay in a rehab center. Manziel faces a misdemeanor assault charge for allegedly hitting and threatening his former girlfriend, a crime which carries a penalty of up to one year in jail.
Also, ESPN's Adam Schefter just posted this quote from Manziel's father on facebook, where he repeatedly says that his son is a druggie and needs to go to jail.
