Obama's love for hip-hop is now well-established. The President cited Kendrick Lamar's "How Much a Dollar Cost" as his favorite song of 2015, and he even invited the Compton rapper to meet with him in the Oval Office. He also recently talked to Kanye West, apparently, as Ye revealed that Obama made him promise he would make beats for Nas' next album. Yesterday, Obama visited SXSW in Austin, Texas to deliver the festival's keynote address. After that speech, which focused on the challenges facing America's tech industry, Obama went on to speak at a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee, which also featured a performance from J. Cole.
Considering Cole's appearance at the event, it's not surprising Obama is a supporter of the Dreamville emcee, but it's still awesome to hear the world's most powerful man express his admiration for the Fayetteville rapper.
"I love J. Cole," said Obama to an adoring crowd. "You know, this is the benefit of having teenage daughters. I actually keep up." Obama also said he was able to speak with Cole's mother and grandmother before the event.
It seems the ultimate credit for the prez's hip-hop knowledge has to go to his daughters. Over a year ago, Malia was spotted donning a Pro Era T-shirt, so she's obviously familiar with huge stars like J. Cole. Whoever wins the next election, no candidate's family will be loved by the hip-hop world like the Obamas are.
