The talented Ta-Nehesi Coates explains his approach to writing "Black Panther."

Writer Ta-Nehesi Coates had an incredible 2015, releasing the award-winning book “Between The World and Me,” which won him a six figure MacArthur “Genius” Grant, which will pay him $625,000 over five years to pursue whatever creative endeavors he chooses. Right now, Coates is working on a new version of Marvel Comic’s “Black Panther” series, the first black comic book character. He shared a sneak peek of the new “Black Panther” at The Atlantic, and we’ve got it here.

Writing comics is definitely a departure for Coates, and he writes that “unlike in prose or even poetry, the writer has to constantly think visually.” Much like Coates other work, power is a central theme. “Can a society part with, and triumph over, the very plunder that made it possible? Asks the celebrated writer, “Can a good man be a king, and would an advanced society tolerate a monarch?”

The panels above come from “Black Panther #1,” which hits shelves on April 6. We’re excited to see what Ta-Nehesi Coates brings to the vital comic series.
