Nicki Minaj holiday performance in Angola Saturday night was greeted with great enthusiasm from those in attendance, but resistance by human rights activists.
According to the New York Post, Nicki Minaj earned $2 million for the show which was hosted by Unitel, a company controlled by Angola’s president José Eduardo dos Santos. The Human Rights Foundation wrote an open letter to Minaj last week urging her to cancel the gig.
“The payment you are receiving from your Angolan sponsors is the result of government corruption and human-rights violations,” wrote Thor Halvorssen, president of the Human Rights Foundation.
The president of Angola since 1979, dos Santos is among the most corrupt leaders on the planet, according to Forbes. Dos Santos has used his power to amass a fortune of an estimated $20 billion while the vast majority of Angola lives in abject poverty. The country's average life expectancy is 41 years.
Should Minaj have cancelled the performance?
