Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" is about to begin a summer takeover, if the Billboard charts are any indication. The rapper's lead single from The New Classic reached new heights this week, as it obtained the #1 spot on the Hot 100, making it Iggy's first #1 single. At the same time, she received a spot at #2 on the Hot 100 thanks to a feature on Ariana Grande's "Problem," giving her two hit singles at once. We'll have to see how long "Fancy" is able to hold down the #1 spot, and if it'll become a certified summer hit-- if this does happen, you can guarantee The New Classic sales will also be on the rise. This past week proved to be eventful for Billboard, as they launched their real time Twitter charts. These charts track, in real time (duh), what is hot/trending on Twitter by way of hashtags (such as the '#np' hashtag) as well as by way of specific words (i.e. 'song', 'music'). There are two charts, one for major artists ('Trending 140') and one for rising artists ('Emerging Artists'). It's pretty cool to see what is actually making waves on the net in real life, rather than plain old album sales. It's also a good look for Billboard, as they keep pace with the ever-progressing digital era. See what else happened on the charts this past week below.
1) Michael Jackson—Xscape: This week Michael Jackson falls down one spot from his debut at #2. His posthumous album pushed out another 67,000 copies, while his total sales are at 224,000.
2) Iggy Azalea— The New Classic: It seems as though Iggy’s mess-up on “Dancing With The Stars” went unnoticed for the most part, while her single “Fancy” reaching platinum sales definitely didn’t go unnoticed. “Fancy” also marked another achievement for Iggy this past week, as it reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 single chart. Perhaps these factors play into The New Classic receiving a boost on the Billboard 200, where it rose up from last week’s #14 to #9. The debut album sold 22,000 units, with total sales of 128,000.
3) The Roots— …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin: The Roots make their debut this week, at the healthy spot of #11, with their latest conceptual album …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. This means the rap group sold 16,723 copies opening week.
4) Pharrell— G I R L: Pharrell Williams fell off a bit since last week, although he never falls too far. This week P lands at #17, after 12 weeks, he’s sold another 12,444 units. His total sales are at 399,639.
5) Eminem— Marshall Mathers LP 2: Marshall Mathers continues to move copies of MMLP2, although we doubt he’s really trying at this point. The rapper comes in at #31 this week, remaining stagnant since last week’s position. The album sold 7,565 copies this week, bringing the grand tally to 2,115,315.
6) Future— Honest: Future’s sophomore release comes in at #35 this week, down 3 spots from last week, unable to keep up with the pace of Iggy Azalea’ The New Classic. The album sold 7,244 copies, while total sales are at 100,195.
7) Justin Timberlake— The 20/20 Experience 2: Justin Timberlake dropped a single spot this week, descending to #44. The singer’s second come-back album of 2013 moved 6,181 copies this week, bringing the total sales up to 982,025 as he nears the 1 million mark.
8) Beyonce— Beyonce: Like JT, Queen Bey experienced a small drop this week from #44 to #45. The singer still managed to sell 6,000 units, after charting for 24 weeks. Her total sales are 1,981,000.
9) YG— My Krazy Life: YG saw a small spike in his chart position this week, from #55 last week to #49 this week. The Krazy Life of YG moved out 5,746 units this week, which is 2% increase from last week’s sales.
10) August Alsina— Testimony: R’n’b artist August Alsina’s debut album fared pretty well for his first big commercial release. Nonetheless, it’s dropping off, falling to #53 this week, after spending 6 weeks on the Billboard 200. This week August sold just over 5k, with 5,046 copies. He’s down 18%.
It should be noted Tech N9ne’s collabos album Strangeluation hasn’t completely disappeared from the Billboard 200, in fact, it sits between YG and August at #51 this week, dropping down from #33. Ricky Rozay’s Mastermind is further down, at #54, he moved around 5k units. Michael Jackson’s greatest hits LP Number Ones, which we saw last week at #28, dropped a few spots to #33, but he’s still got two other albums that are also charting.
