Weekly review of the Hip-Hop and R&B sales/charts.

This week Big Sean and Juicy J enter the Billboard 200, debuting one after another. Each rapper sold a respectable amount, however, it's nothing too crazy. Sean Don actually sold less than his debut album, although he promoted Hall Of Fame as better than his debut, perhaps the fans didn't care that much? They cared enough though-- he moved 72,000 units, which gave him a #3 debut. It sometimes sounds like Big Sean is trying to go the mainstream route, do you think his numbers reflect that? Juicy J, on the other hand, has always remained somewhat underground, yet he has a very strong fan base, who came out to support the Three 6 Mafia rapper's solo debut. If we look at Sean's G.O.O.D. Music boss for a moment, Kanye West, we actually see the rapper has been climbing back up the charts-- could Yeezus make a resurgence (not that it dropped that long ago)? With the announcement of a "Yeezus" tour with Kendrick Lamar, it's probable that Yeezus will continue to climb back up the charts.

1)          Big Sean—Hall Of Fame: Big Sean’s new album, although a step up from his debut, was not necessarily received any better sales-wise. The rapper pushed 72,000 units opening week, landing him a #3 debut on the Billboard 200. While Finally Famous debuted at the same number, it sold more units—87,000.

2)          Juicy J—Stay Trippy: Juicy J’s debut solo effort on Taylor Gang comes up behind his G.O.O.D. competition. The rapper debuts at #4 with 64,000 copies sold opening week. Is it less or more than you expected?

3)          Robin Thicke—Blurred Lines: Could Robin Thicke’s controversial MTV VMA performance with Miley Cyrus affect his album sales? If so, it’s in a good way, as the album rose up from last week’s #5 spot to #6, and he saw an increase in sales of 25%. That means he moved 57,775 units this past week. Thicke is now at 391, 808 sales total.

4)          Justin TimberlakeThe 20/20 Experience: JT saw a crazy increase in sales this past, with 135% . He moved way up to #6 from #22 last week, selling another 37,359 units. This is undoubtedly because of his lengthy performance at the VMAs not to mention that NSYNC reunion. Justin is now at a 2,217,980 sales total and counting.

5)         Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—The Heist: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis rose up the charts this week to #13 from #20 last week. They sold 24, 789 units increasing in sales by 47%. These two have sold 1,041,858 units total.

6)         Jay ZMagna Carta Holy Grail: HOV saw his album go double platinum this past week, that’s after only eight weeks on the charts (but yes, it was platinum upon its release). This week the album sits at #14 dow four spots from last week’s #10. Jay moved another 24k, down in sales by 13%.

7)         Goodie Mob—Age Against The Machine: Goodie Mob’s new album dropped without too much noise on August 27th. The album debuts on the Billboard 200 this week at #30, selling 13,000 copies opening week.

8)          Kanye West—Yeezus: Kanye West’s Yeezus continues its climb up the charts, ever since his new single, “Bound 2” was announced (plus his VMA performance of “Blood On The Leaves”). The rapper rose up more than ten spots this past week, from #49 to #38. He’s been charting for 11 weeks, and sold around 10,500 units this week, making that an increase in sales of 46%. Total sales so far for Yeezy are 527,112.

9)          A$AP Ferg—Trap Lord: Fergenstein’s Trap Lord dropped at the same time as Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris, and although Doris was on top initially, it seems that Ferg is now on top (although really, he’s not that on top, as he is at #44). Ferg dropped from #9 to #44 after two weeks on the charts. Trap Lord sold 9,050 units this past week, dropping in sales by 72%.

10)        Earl Sweatshirt—Doris: Doris, as previously mentioned, comes in below Trap Lord this week. Will A$AP Mob fans actually be more support than OF fans in the long run? Doris sits at #49 this week, after debuting at #5 last week. Earl sold 8,662 copies, down in sales by 82%.

In other news, J. Cole's Born Sinner saw a drop this week, from #36 to #53, still selling around 8k. Kendrick Lamar, who we've been tracking recently, dropped a few spots this week from #44 to #46; he sold 8,780 (making that 1,019,695 sales total). Eminem's new single "Berzerk" has been doing numbers though, with 362,000 downloads sold, debuting him at #32 on the Top 40 chart.
