Recently, we featured Funk Volume's Dizzy Wright, and his stand-out track "Maintain" on Track Breakdown, and today we return to the Funk Volume crew, but this time to get some more knowledge about Jarren Benton's single "Razor Blades & Steak Knives," produced by Kato.
The single is the first off Jarren's forthcoming debut on Funk Volume, My Grandma's Basement. The single stays true to Jarren's already-established crazy and energetic raps, while showing off his improved prowess on the mic with lyrical wordplay and bars straight out of left field, always with a slight comedic tone. The Atlanta native has been on his grind with two projects behind him, Huffing Glue With Hasselhoff and Freebasing With Kevin Bacon. My Grandma's Basement will be Jarren's most diverse project yet though, according to the rapper himself.
However, his debut single, "Razor Blades & Steak Knives," follows the general pattern of his two last projects, and it's not a bad thing. Production from frequent collaborator, Kato, may be a reason in part, but as well, the comedic and Eminem-influenced lines are something Jarren is known for. Nonetheless, do not be misled. In our interview with Jarren, he says that My Grandma's Basement covers multiple sounds of hip-hop-- Jarren may do what he does best, and surprise us all.
Back to the single at hand. We spoke to Jarren about the creation of "Razor Blades & Steak Knives," and interestingly enough, the beat provided by Kato is almost three years old-- yet Jarren still makes it fresh. He reveals how it took him three years to come up with a concept crazy enough to work on the beat, as well, Kato talks about the instrumental from his point of view, which is on the boards.
