Nico Segal (formerly known as Donnie Trumpet) is best known for his work with Chance the Rapper and for creating Surf, his 2015 album with The Social Experiment. In his latest endeavor, he has reconnected with high school friend pianist Julian Reid, bassist Lane Beckstrom, and drummer Everett Reid to create a four-piece jazz(-ish) quartet called The JuJu. Their seven-track debut Exchange features Jamila Woods and the production of Nate Fox.
"In the last five or six months, I was really feeling antsy to drop something because after touring with Chance for the last couple years, I just never had this outlet to make instrumental music," Segal told Noisey.
Added Beckstrom. "For me the main jazz spirit and fun of this music comes from the mostly improvised recording process: None of these tunes existed in any form before we got to the studio."
