I'll admit I think about The-Dream's music, like, forever and always, but even more so since yesterday, when I spoke to Pusha T and iterated just how much I'd like to see a joint album between the two artists. Now, out of nowhere, The-Dream blesses us with an album's worth of Sam Cooke covers, IAMSAM. If you don't know who Sam Cooke is, well Wikipedia says: "He is generally considered among the greatest of all time." Need I say more?
The-Dream shared the project with a few personal words about its origins. As he says, Sam Cooke was on of his mother's favorite artists, and she passed away on December 23 1992, so obviously this release is to honor and celebrate her. The singer/producer also reveals the bulk of these covers were recorded during Beyonce's album sessions in 2014.
He wrote on Instagram, "My Mother loved a lot of Artist growing up, but the one we shared the most interest in together was Sam Cooke, so Tonight I give him back to her. These songs were originally recording during the making of @beyonce 's 4 album in 2010 w my good Friend Pat Thrall. My mother passed on the 23rd day of December in 1992."
