Washington DC's Kennedy Center recently hosted a performance of Kendrick Lamar's Kunta's Groove Sessions, and the high profile event may have convinced the venue to dive further into the world of rap. Today, an announcement has been made that legendary New York producer and rapper Q-Tip has been appointed the very first artistic director of hip-hop culture for the Kennedy Center.
A press release elaborated on the Tribe Called Quest songwriter's new role, which will find him primarily curating performances at the center. “Q-Tip will establish a dynamic, new program that will stretch across all disciplines, bringing the historic roots, contemporary expressions, and transformative power of Hip Hop to the [Kennedy] Center and local and national audiences”.
We're excited to see what Tip brings to the table in the position, and we're hoping it means that other art centers across the country will take note and enlist the help of fellow hip-hop legends.
