A few months ago, we shared news that Mobb Deep member Prodigy had sued his label Universal Music Group for improperly paying him royalties for his solo work. It wasn’t a huge lawsuit, only asking for $57,489 plus lawyer fees (which ended up being more than that amount). TMZ is now reporting that Prodigy has reached a settlement with Universal. However, the settlement has an odd stipulation.
In order for Prodigy to receive the agreed upon $153,751, Prodigy has to send out a tweet. Specifically a tweet that says: “My dispute with UMPG was all a misunderstanding. Thankful that we resolved it quickly and happy to be continuing my long-standing relationship with UMPG.” Sounds like Universal Music Publishing Group was definitely in the wrong here, but doesn’t want other artists passing over them because of the bad publicity. This might be first lawsuit settlement where a tweet is a specific requirement.
Until we see the tweet (or two tweets, since that statement surpasses the 140 character limit), we’ll have to assume the two parties haven’t reached an agreement.
You can catch Prodigy on tour this spring as part of Mobb Deep’s Hell On Earth 20th Anniversary Tour.
