You might be thinking "Here we go, yet another dissection into the enigma that is Young Thug." But that's just the thing with Thugger. At surface value he may appear to be an overly flamboyant, drug fueled nonsense rapper, but it seems that the further we dig into his releases and their lyrics, the more bountiful they seem.
Sure, his style (both in fashion and music) may need to be taken with a pill if it isn't your usual taste. With the right amount of patience - and an ear ready to decipher his trademark cawing delivery - chances are you'll find something to get out of Young Thug.
The emcee is shrouded in controversy and has no issue living up to his unpredictable reputation that proceeds him. This intangibility is present in Thug's tracks and creates for some wildly entertaining listening experiences, if you embrace it.
I know that his flows are so jarringly coded in sometimes barely legible upon first listen that they can scare potential fans away. So, haters bear with me and Thugger loyalists vibe with me as HotNewHipHop counts down the most entertaining Young Thug lyrics.
"Oh Ya" from "1017 Thug 2"
“You know we up, I’m not talking ‘bout no Foldgers
We get 10,000 pounds of midget
The way she walk up on a player I really thought that baby know us
But she just wanna fuck them digits”
When it comes to Young Thug, his unique flow is oftentimes responsible for heightening otherwise simple lyrics. With this quote, off of 1017 Thug 2, you get the creative couplets - but you also get bars that stand on their own, on paper. It's an in-your-face sequence about an in-your-face lady.
Beware gold diggers. Thugger's onto you.
Beware gold diggers. Thugger's onto you.
"Can't Tell" from "Barter 6"
"Pussy boy, I'll leave you dead and call it dead-ication"
Right, nothing groundbreaking here necessarily in terms of rap pedigree being proven. Though, if you didn't have an "oh shit" reaction to this pipe bomb with Lil Wayne's name on it, then you just aren't having fun with your hip hop fandom. Whether you are a fan of Wayne or Thug's or both, your eyebrow raised with this Barter 6 diss.
To quote Gladiator, "Are you not entertained?"
"Halftime" from "Barter 6"
"Hit the streets and tear that bitch up like I’m Willie B
I own the ROC like Jay Z
Got a hunnid million flat, like my mothafuckin’ idol
Every time I dress myself, that shit go viral"
These bars off of Barter 6 should be crowd pleasing for how direct Thugger is on them.
Drugs? Check. Jay Z reference? Check. Address the confusing wardrobe choices that fuel the haters? Check, check, check. And all of these checks for a song that shares album-space with a song called "Check."
Small world.
"Miss U" from "1017 Thug"
"I miss you, I want kiss you
I want lick you... Pubic hair
Oh my god, I'm going there"
Young Thug never hesitates to get as vivid as his curious little heart desires when rapping about his sexual escapades. Here, he cleverly gets a little meta with his lyricism. Yep, he's going down on a lucky someone. But, he's also going there - as in, TMI bro.
"Lifestyle" from Rich Gang
"N*ggas serving great white like I’m feeding sharks."
This is a primo-bar in ode to some primo goods. Even the most straight edge member of your crew can hear this bar and wince because it's that dirty. Coming off of a verse on a Rich Gang track, this line steals the show. No offense Quan.
"Take a Picture" with Mike Will Made It
"I am a African American, but my bitch a stallion
Breath smell like Italian
Birds in Atlanta, no falcon."
A shout out to his native Atlanta Falcons in the form of slick wordplay made to justify Thuggers thug. It's hard to knock Thug as he displays his deft hand in making himself look awesome. He's takin' ladies for rides, living that eponymous thug life. Props to Young Thug for the Italian American shout out, even though if it is in reference to his piazon.
