Social media users were quick to look to the rapper’s dating history and raise their eyebrows.

Big Sean is facing some flack following comments he made about Black women in a recent interview. The 33-year-old sat down with ESSENCE to discuss the BET comedy/drama series he stars in, called Twenties, ahead of its season two finale, and during the interview, discussed how he’s got a lot in common with his on-screen character, Tristan.

“I can relate to the essence of him because there are times where I’m not on social media. There are times when I am on social media. There are times where I put my phone down and leave it somewhere so I can relate to wanting to disconnect from the grid and go offline,” the rapper explained.

Tristan is a photographer, so Sean Don, as a performer, can relate to his role’s natural creative side. “I don’t agree with everything he does or how he acts or how he says [things] but I can see where he’s coming from,” he explained to the outlet.

Elsewhere in the interview, the “Mercy” hitmaker spoke on ghosting and being ghosted, admitting that it’s happened to him before. He also touched on what it’s like to work in a woman-led environment on the set of Twenties, saying, “women are magical. Black women are the closest thing to God.”

“Y’all be creating life. It’s funny how this doctor broke it down to me. He was like we all come out of a Black hole just like the universe was birthed and it’s really deep when you get down to it,” he continued. Following the story’s publication, several Twitter issues took issue with what Big Sean had to say, even pulling up receipts about his dating history that had them questioning his words.

A snippet from the interview has been uploaded by XXL Magazine, and the Santa Monica native can be found in the replies, saying, “yeah my mom [and] both grandma’s were the closest thing.”

Do you think people are taking Big Sean’s comments out of context, or are they right to criticize him?
