L.A. Reid has had worked with many of the biggest names in music throughout his career in the industry, many of which came about during his seven years at Def Jam. One of his biggest accomplishments while at the label was reviving Mariah Carey's then-floundering career, helping her to craft the extremely successful comeback album, The Emancipation Of Mimi.
Guesting on the Rap Radar podcast this week, Reid talked a bit about his time at the label, and revealed that Carey also gave him some advice, namely suggesting Jay Z to take the position as President.
According to Reid, he called the singer up for ideas on the position, to which she offered “hire Jigga!”
The mogul then joked that the move may have been a bit more calculated than it seemed, as Jay happened to come through the office not long after their conversation. “I was like wait, they choreographed this,” said Reid. “That was too good. He was so on time and it worked out.”
Hov ended up serving as president from 2004 to 2008, launching the career of Rihanna during his stay.
