After garnering $24.2 million at the box office on Friday, "Straight Outta Compton" closed out its opening weekend with $56.1 million in sales.
The movie's opening weekend was not only exemplary, it was historic. It had the biggest August opening ever for an R-rated film, far surpassing the $45.1 million 2001 opening of "American Pie 2." It was also the best opening ever for a music biopic, outstripping "Walk the Line" ($22.3 million) and "8 Mile" ($51.2 million).
"Straight Outta Compton" dominated the competition, as weekend runner-up "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation" netted $17 million in its third weekend and "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." debuted with $13.5 million.
"Compton" has already doubled its $29 million budget, so even the studio execs are thrilled. Shoutout to Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, director F. Gary Gray, and everyone else involved with the project.
