It's one thing to have the two most critically-acclaimed rap albums of the last four years, it's another to be recognized by your home state's government for your achievements. Yesterday, Kendrick Lamar became the 35th person in California history to receive the state's "generational icon" award.
“Being from the city of Compton and knowing the parks that I played at and neighborhoods," Lamar said during the ceremony, "I always thought how great the opportunity would be to give back to my community off what I do and music. To do that from the city all the way to a state standpoint, and have these young kids look at me as some type of inspiration is really an honor and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for honoring me today.”
