Earlier this afternoon XXL unveiled their 2015 XXL Freshmen cover after much anticipation. The cover's been a long time coming, with artists pushing for their spot several months ago. The Freshmen class includes a few unsurprising names, such as Fetty Wap, DeJ Loaf, OG Maco and Tink, and a few from left-field like GoldLink and Kidd Kidd, although, that tends to be the case every year.
To promote the cover further and speak on this year's selection, two XXL staff members, including the Editor-in-Chief, visited The Breakfast Club for an interview. While everyone debates why so-and-so did not make the cover but so-and-so did, Vanessa revealed why two seemingly obvious candidates aren't on it.
It sounds like both PartyNextDoor and ILoveMakonnen (it should be noted both on OVO) were uninterested in being part of the XXL Freshmen class, perhaps following in the footsteps of their labelhead, Drake.
"Nobody turned it down this year, but some funny responses...Not funny, I don't wanna be weird, but not such responsive responses from the PartyNextDoor/ILoveMakonnen camp. That they didn't seem so interested, so we didn't run that lane too hard," Vanessa revealed.
PND actually nabbed a solo cover of The FADER pretty recently, so we doubt he's worried.
