Netflix CEO is donating $120 million in support of HBCUs.

In the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement and ongoing protests, Netflix has taken the initiative as a company to support the black community.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin are donating $120 million to support student scholarships at historically black colleges and universities. “We’ve supported these three extraordinary institutions for the last few years because we believe that investing in the education of black youth is one of the best ways to invest in America’s future,” said Quillin and Hastings.

On Wednesday they donated $40 million to Morehouse College, which is the largest individual donation the university has ever received. The couple is also donating $40 million to the United Negro College Fund, as well as another $40 million to Spelman College.

Hastings said that now is the time when “everyone needs to figure out” how to contribute to solving racism and that HBCUs have been resilient "little-known gems" for black education.

“We hope this additional $120 million donation will help more black students follow their dreams and also encourage more people to support these institutions - helping to reverse generations of inequity in our country.”
