We may be witnessing tragedy as looters burn businesses to the ground and rioters storm through cities causing destruction, but the peaceful protests calling for equity and equality rage on. Amid the outrage that people feel about George Floyd, the four police officers involved in his death, and the countless others who have lost their lives due to the color of their skin, Floyd's family continues to privately mourn the loss of their love one. Roxie Washington, the mother of Floyd's child, gave a moving, yet brief, speech today (June 2) as she spoke about Floyd and their daughter, six-year-old Gianna.
"I don't have a lot to say because I can't get my words together right now," Roxie said tearfully. "But, I wanted everybody to know that this is what those officers took [from me]." Then, Roxie began sobbing. "At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with they families. Gianna does not have a father. He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle. If there's a problem she's having, she needs her dad. She does not have that anymore."
In between tears, Roxie added, "I'm here for my baby and I'm here for George because I want justice for him. I want justice for him 'cause he was good. No matter what anybody thinks, he was good." Pointing out Gianna, Roxie said, "This is the proof that he was a good man." Watch the clip of her statement below.
