Houston showed out today is the most beautiful way possible, despite the tragic reason they gathered in the first place. Nearly a week after the passing of George Floyd, a Houston man who was suffocated to death by former officer Derek Chauvin, the family of George Floyd, friends, and the city of Houston came together to march in his honor. Trae Tha Truth and Bun B were among the notable rappers in attendance while other speakers included Rev. William Lawson, Mayor Turner, and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
"It's not just black people who are angry. It is the world that is angry," Rev. Lawson, who marched with MLK Jr., said. "You have been heard... Maybe nobody had heard you before. But with the death of this one simple Houston man, you have been heard."
Despite what mainstream media has portrayed in several cities regarding the protests, the march in Houston today went down without any problems, though KHOU reports that many people had collapsed from heat and dehydration.
George Floyd spent the majority of his life in Houston where he has family. He hailed from the Third Ward area, home to Beyonce and many others, and was a member of Screwed Up Rap Click.
Earlier today, it was announced that there will be a memorial service scheduled on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. in Houston and another one from North Carolina Saturday at 3 p.m.
